   SyslogView Filter tutorial

1. Introduction

This tutorial aims to show you the strength of using Datagram SyslogView's filter system.

With the vast amounts of data stored in the Syslogserver, effective tools are needed to identify important events and log entries. SyslogView offers both quickfilters and regular filters to aid in this process. SyslogView's alarm definitions basically work in the same manner - helping you to be notified when a certain type of event occurs (or doesn't occur).

The most effective way to learn the tips in this tutorial is if you at the same time try filters of your own. If you do not already have an installation of Syslogserver, a trial version of Datagram Syslogserver can be downloaded from http://www.syslogserver.com free of charge (and without a questionnaire). In the freeware version you are, however, limited to quickfilters and a few filter.

Datagram Syslogserver uses the Syslog protocol, defined in RFC 3164.
